Upon the request of participating countries, the 2nd MEAs REN Meeting recommended that UNEP ROAP collect and collate import and export data of PCBs and used lead acid batteries as well as their seizures made in Asia and the Pacific region in order to obtain concrete statistics to support actions against illegal cross border movement of Hazardous Wastes.
UNEP ROAP is now conducting a desk study to find out magnitude of trade, general routes of movement for wastes of such kinds and import and export discrepancies among countries. As you are aware, the accuracy of the analysis depends mainly on the integrity and accuracy of data. Therefore, we design the questionnaire to seek assistance from members in Asia and the Pacific region in obtaining relevant data. We hope that the outcomes of the survey may reflect the overall situation of the region and could be used to support further actions.
The questionnaire focuses on the trade in PCBs and Used Lead Acid Batteries, which are among the most commonly traded Hazardous Wastes. Export, import and seizures of illegal trade fall into three forms for each of the two categories to be filled out. Form I (a, b, c) are for data of PCBs and Form II (a, b, c) are for data of Used Lead Acid Batteries. Please provide us with data of the latest three years, i.e. the years of 2006, 2007 and 2008.
We will be very much grateful if you could fill in the forms and return them to us before 20th August 2009. We would like to present the outcome of the related Desk Study in the coming third MEA-REN workshop. If you have any question, please do not hesitate to contact us.
